[DAY21] Hakodate is beautiful

  • walked through Hakodate: Asaichi Market, Kanemori Warehouses, Motomachi (looks like SF!!)
  • spontaneously decided to hike Mt Hakodate because suddenly it wasn’t as cold as it was in the morning
  • went back to Asaichi Market (‘Morning Market’) for dinner lol

forgot that i’m not huge on shopping somehow and thought i’d like downtown, and though it was interesting to see, my favs were def motomachi (the buildings! the view! the history, and the streets!) and 100% mt hakodate (can’t believe i almost didn’t go just because i thought it’s ‘just another view’ how did i forget that i love views?? and mountains, god, mountains)

  • huge crab so huge
  • many seafoods live and dried
  • pretty bridge near the very commercial warehouses
Walked southward through the town
thanks masa and W. for the food rec– was told it’s the ‘soul food’ of people in Hakodate. ‘chinese chicken burger’ with oolong tea and pierrot fries (aka fries in cream and pasta sauce it was a revelation)
  • and the autumn foliage trees!!
  • that european influence as a historical port city
  • and the hills!!
  • like so beautiful wth
ok some streets on motomachi literally make me feel like i’m in SF, i stopped at one street corner and felt physically disoriented because my body thought i was back in the US. this might be the second time i’ve ever had this feeling, the first time being in Beirut, feeling like I was back home, some of the streets, the post-colonial gentrified/urban landscape characteristics were just so similar… that feeling of physical displacement

  • hiking up mt hakodate was definitely worth it and not tough at all so pleasant, and the trees actually blocked the super chilly wind that was freezing me downtown
spontaneously decided to hike mt hakodate though originally was planning not to, because it was so cold. glad i did. it was so worth it.
went back to asaichi (morning market lol) for dinner, glad i had squid in my donburi because was told by masa that that’s a thing in hakodate. salmon so fresh, not cold and tight like the fridged ones, falling apart at the fat lines, not a huge fan of ikura but this was real good, much yum v warm restaurant good
